Hello Eastview Families-
As Eastview’s current PTA President, I have many roles to help Eastview throughout the year. An important one is being able to give support to Eastview families in need. I would like to introduce you to one of our own Eastview families, the Samuels (Kevin, Kari, Nolan and Piper), that could use our love and support. Nolan Samuels is currently a first grader in Miss Bartter’s class at Eastview. His sister, Piper, was supposed to start kindergarten at Eastview this August however, 5 year old Piper was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma on August 8, 2016. Ewing’s Sarcoma is a rare form of bone cancer. Piper has begun treatment at Rainbow in Cleveland and has a challenging road ahead. Piper loves to wear a t-shirt that says “Girls Crush”. For that reason, family and friends have started the motto of “Piper will CRUSH cancer!”
Many of you have asked the Eastview PTA how you can help the Samuels family. Here are 6 great ways…
1. Wear your “TEAM PIPER GIRLS CRUSH” bracelet:
Many of you may have seen the pink bracelets that everyone is wearing….they are “TEAM PIPER GIRLS CRUSH” bracelets. The bracelets are in Piper’s favorite color PINK and have dolphins (Piper’s favorite animal) on them! The bracelets come in both adult and child size and I have lots to pass out!
It is wonderful to see all of the pink Team Piper bracelets throughout Avon Lake and beyond. A couple weeks ago, I had the manager at Subway ask me for one and how she could help! Imagine how Piper and her family feel when they see people in their community (even those they don’t know) wearing a “TEAM PIPER GIRLS CRUSH” bracelet! Wearing a bracelet is such a simple way to let the Samuels family know that we are always thinking of them and Piper and praying for Piper to CRUSH cancer! If you would like a bracelet for you or your child, please email Lisa Sheehan (email@example.com) or Alyssa Soloff (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will send you the bracelets home in your child’s folder.
2. Record a VIDEO MESSAGE for Piper:
Miss Bartter, Nolan’s teacher, has been awesome in helping support the Samuels family. She has created an Instagram account, Piper’s Positive Vibe Tribe! They have been collecting video clips from Nolan’s class, as well as from members around the community, to post to the Instagram account to provide Piper with entertainment, laughter and positive vibes! We are hoping that you would like to join them in their efforts!
We are collecting short (must be less than 60 seconds) video clips to brighten Piper’s day! The collected clips will be posted for Piper to view on the Instagram account, Piper’s Positive Vibe Tribe! Be sure to follow:)
To keep it organized, we would like to request clips from the following grades during the following months (Eastview siblings are welcome to do more than one month if they would like):
October - First Grade
November - Kindergarten
December - Second Grade
January - Third Grade
February - Fourth Grade
Here are the guidelines for the videos:
1. Say hello to Piper directly and then introduce each person in the video (the student could also say what grade they're in at Eastview)
*if the video is being taken somewhere unique (a museum, the zoo, a beach, etc) then tell her where you are
2. Tell a joke and wish her well!
Things to remember that make a great video -
1. Speak clearly and loudly enough for Piper to hear the person speaking.
2. The video needs to be less than 60 seconds. That's the maximum amount of time allotted on Instagram.
3. Visit Piper's Positive Vibe Tribe on Instagram and see what we've collected so far!
Videos can be emailed to Julie Bartter at email@example.com
3. Send Cards/Notes to Piper and Nolan:
A PO box has been created for Piper, so that she can get cards, pictures, stickers and notes of encouragement. So please, let's flood her with love! Also, you can send some love to big brother, Nolan to the address below as well.
You can send items to:
Team PIPER Girls Crush Cancer
PO Box 237
Avon Lake, OH 44012-9998
4. Visit Piper’s Caring Bridge Link:
Kari and Kevin have created a Caring Bridge page to allow family and friends to receive updates regarding Piper's progress: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/piperwillcrushcancer.
5. Help Fight for more Pediatric Cancer Research:
More importantly, Kari and Kevin encourage everyone to help support pediatric cancer awareness and research - whether by making a financial donation, donating blood or pushing Congress to increase funding to find a cure. This is something no family should ever endure, and the stats around how little funding goes to help with pediatric research are just staggering. Only 4% of national cancer funding goes towards pediatric cancer, which makes finding a cure and progress on treatments hard to come by. And for rare cancers like Piper's, the funding is even scarcer. Please see the document attached for more information.
6. Attend Avon Lake High School’s Last Home Football Game on Friday, October 28th, 2016:
Avon Lake’s last home game on Friday, October 28th, 2016 vs. North Olmsted will be dedicated to Piper. More information will be coming soon!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your support,
Eastview PTA President 2016-2017
